PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) is further strengthening its commitment to achieve zero carbon emissions faster by targeting a reduction in emissions of up to 978 kilotons of CO2 by 2030. One of the key steps in achieving this target is adding a new fleet with dual fuel technology and the use of environmentally friendly green fuel. .

“The long-term decarbonization target is in line with the plan to achieve zero emissions by 2050,” said PIS Business Planning Director Eka Suhendra in a statement in Jakarta, Friday, at the Gastech 2024 forum which took place in Texas, United States. This step is also in line with the big plans set out by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Paris Agreement regarding climate change.

The zero emissions target makes PIS 10 years ahead of the target set by the government in 2060. “We realize that the shipping industry contributes significantly to global carbon emissions, especially from burning ship fuel. Therefore, we are committed to reducing this negative impact by implementing “various innovations and the latest technology, including adopting green fuels such as LPG, LNG and ammonia,” said Eka.

More than 50% of ships operated by PIS are now capable of using biofuel or green fuel. PIS is also a pioneer in the use of dual fuel vessels with six vessels in the PIS fleet utilizing LPG and LNG as green fuel alternatives. A total of 40 ships in the PIS fleet have been equipped with energy-saving devices that can increase ship fuel efficiency by between 3%-20%.

In addition, PIS implements comprehensive engine power limitations and cruise management to reduce emissions. The fleet has international certification as proof of the quality and high standards applied in implementing sustainable policies, both from a business and operational perspective. (Ant/Z-2)
