Peru reinforces surveillance and environmental monitoring in the Machu Picchu sanctuary

Lima, Oct 14 (EFE).- The Peruvian authorities inaugurated this Monday a new administrative headquarters of the National Service of Protected Natural Areas (Sernanp) that will strengthen the surveillance and monitoring actions of the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

The new Sernanp headquarters will also be used for surveillance and monitoring of the Manu National Park, which, like the Machu Picchu sanctuary, is a protected natural area and considered emblematic for its biodiversity, according to an official statement.

The person in charge of inaugurating the headquarters, located in the Cusco district of San Jerónimo, was the Minister of the Environment, Juan Carlos Castro Vargas, who highlighted the Government’s commitment to the protection of these territories, pointing out that the new headquarters is the result of a joint effort. to ensure that these protected areas are global references in conservation.

Likewise, he explained that this headquarters will enhance coordination between both protected areas, which are home to unique species and ecosystems that need to be preserved in the long term.

The head of Sernanp, José Carlos Nieto Navarrete, stated that this new infrastructure is important for strengthening the effective management of these national protected areas, since it will facilitate the daily work carried out by personnel in the field.

It will also encourage collaboration between communities and Sernanp to promote sustainable development that benefits everyone.
