NVIDIA Enterprise Division provides technology for five new Petrobras supercomputers

Technology from NVIDIA, the company that redefined computer graphics and ushered in the era of modern AI, will equip Petrobras’ new acquisition of five supercomputers for its technology park. This investment of R$500 million from the state-owned company includes the integration of 2,106 H100 GPUs, from the Hopper family, with 80 GB each, into the project.
The new machines, acquired from Lenovo, winner of the tender, will begin to be assembled this year and will be operational in 2025. They will be used to analyze seismic data and create three-dimensional images of the subsoil.

This advanced technology will allow the creation of more accurate geological maps, essential for locating oil and gas reservoirs. Furthermore, the updating and expansion of geophysical and geological data processing capacity will provide faster and more accurate results, especially for challenges in ultra-deep waters and exploratory areas, such as the pre-salt and the Equatorial Margin.

In the 5 Petrobras Supercomputers, the State-owned company will invest R$500 million in new models equipped with more than 2 thousand H100 GPUs from the technology company

The modernization of supercomputers is part of Petrobras’ strategy of updating its technology park, in accordance with the investments foreseen in the 2024-28 Strategic Plan.

The new supercomputer, weighing approximately 50 tons and 50 meters long, will achieve approximately 73 PFlops FP64 (or 143 PFLOPS Rpeak). When completed, the installation will replace the Fênix, Atlas and Dragão clusters, among others, which will be deactivated.

This supercomputer, which will probably be the largest in Latin America, was designed with a focus on sustainability, using technologies that maximize energy performance, such as the choice of the NVIDIA H100 GPU.

With improvements that reduce power consumption in data centers and compute-intensive environments, the H100 aligns with NVIDIA’s sustainability goals, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of AI and HPC operations. Additionally, these optimizations reduce the need for intensive cooling systems, improving thermal efficiency.

GPU recyclability

NVIDIA is also advancing GPU recyclability and more sustainable manufacturing processes, as highlighted in its sustainability report.

For Marcio Aguiar, director of NVIDIA’s Enterprise division for Latin America, the company’s participation in this Petrobras project reflects the evolution of technology in Brazil. “We are excited to provide our cutting-edge GPUs to Petrobras, which will raise the level of processing and precision in the oil and gas sector in the country. This partnership reinforces our leadership in technological innovation, in addition to highlighting our commitment to sustainability and operational excellence”, he states.
