WASHINGTON, DC — Some Republicans tried this Sunday to distance themselves from the latest messages from Donald Trump against the Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris which he expressed during a rally over the weekend in Wisconsinwhere he hinted that it is a “mentally defective”.
Speech on immigration
Trump escalated his personal attacks on the vice president during what was billed as a speech on immigration after Harris’ visit to the US-Mexico border.
“Joe Biden became mentally disabled,” Trump said. “Kamala was born like this. She was born like this. And if you think about it, only a mentally disabled person would have allowed this to happen to our country. “Anyone would know this.”
On other occasions, Trump has falsely claimed that Harris “turned black” and has repeatedly called her “stupid,” “weak,” “dumb as a rock,” and “lazy.” A little more than a month before the presidential election, his allies pressured him publicly and privately to talk about the economy, immigration and other issues.
“I just think the best path forward is to pursue the case that Harris’ policies are destroying the country,” the senator said. Lindsey GrahamR-South Carolina, on CNN’s “State of the Union” when asked about Trump’s comments. “It’s liberal madness.”
When asked if he approved of the comments, the congressman Tom EmmerRepublican of Minnesota, distanced himself during an interview at the programa “This Week” from ABC. “I think Kamala Harris is the wrong choice for America,” said Emmer, who helps Trump’s running mate, JD Vanceto prepare for Tuesday’s vice presidential debate. “I think Kamala Harris is actually as bad or worse than the government we’ve seen over the last four years.”
When pressed, Emmer responded: “I think we should stick to the problems. The thing is, Donald Trump fixed it once. They ruined it. He’s going to fix it again. “Those are the questions.”
The former governor of Maryland, Larry Hoganrunning for Senate as a moderate Republican, brought up Trump’s false claims that Harris, the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, had previously downplayed her Black heritage. Harris attended Howard University, a historically black university, and has consistently identified as black and South Asian throughout her political career.
