New Teachers Get a Leg-Up in Yucatán

Well, well, well! If it isn’t the Ministry of Education in Yucatán stepping up its game like a caffeinated kangaroo on an educational bungee cord! On October 14, 2024, they ceremoniously handed out certificates to 22 fresh-faced Basic Education tutors, ensuring these educators have a solid support system as they leap into the chaotic world of teaching. Never mind the apples for the teacher; these new recruits are getting a whole tutor’s guide!

Now, you may be thinking: “What do tutors do besides nod and smile knowingly?” Well, fear not, dear reader! Hilario Vélez Merino, the man with a name almost as complicated as a teacher’s lesson plan, emphasized that these new tutors will be the guiding light for newly minted teachers. Translation? Think of them as the Yoda to the rookie Skywalkers, only with fewer lightsabers and more lesson plans.

And it gets better! Yucatán isn’t just stickin’ their necks out to help new teachers for the fun of it; they are pioneering the very idea of a tutoring program with curricular value! Take that, other states! Carlos Rosado Dávila, the state coordinator of this ambitious tutoring venture, proudly announced that in the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year, 560 teachers will be monitored by a grand total of 101 tutors. You read that right—more tutance than a poorly organized dance party!

This carefully curated mentorship will take place both in person and online, covering topics that matter. We’re talking about lesson planning tailored to fit right into the New Mexican School guidelines. Because if there’s anything newly hired teachers need, it’s less chaos and more clarity—like trying to decipher algebra in a foreign language while someone is trying to sell you avocados at the same time. We’ve all been there.

And let’s spare a thought for the tutors themselves! Itzel Flores Coral, one of the new tutors ready to mold the minds of tomorrow, rightly pointed out that her role goes beyond merely transmitting knowledge. It’s about infusing a little passion, a sprinkle of enthusiasm, and a dash of sheer bravery into the new teachers’ lives. After all, transmitting passion is perhaps more important than teaching how to differentiate between ‘there,’ ‘their,’ and ‘they’re’—even if most adults still get it wrong!

So hats off to the State Coordination of Tutoring for Newly Enrolled Teachers and Teaching Technicians! They’re not merely handing out certificates; they’re orchestrating a chord of collective improvement that will hopefully result in teachers who don’t just survive their first year but thrive in the exhilarating chaos of education. And one can only imagine the number of lesson planning Facebook groups set to flourish as a result!

In a world where educational support often resembles a game of roulette—one spin and you’re either empowered or sent back to the drawing board—Yucatán is blaring its own horn. Let’s hope this initiative paves the way for others to follow suit. After all, when it comes to education, we should all be singing from the same song sheet, if only to avoid a cataclysmic karaoke night where nobody knows the words.

Mérida, Yucatán, October 14, 2024.- With the aim of offering academic and social support to new teachers, the Ministry of Education of the Government of the State of Yucatán, through the State Coordination of Tutoring for Newly Enrolled Teachers and Teaching Technicians delivered certificates to 22 new Basic Education tutors, for the 2024-2025 school year.

Representing the Secretary of Education, Juan Enrique Balam Várguez, the general director of Educational Development and Regional Management, Hilario Vélez Merino, highlighted the essential work of the new tutors, who will guide the recently incorporated teachers to facilitate their adaptation process and strengthen the training of new teachers in front of a group.

Highlighting that Yucatán is the only state in the country to offer the tutoring service with curricular value, Carlos Rosado Dávila, state coordinator of the tutoring program, reported that in the 2024-2025 cycle a total of 560 teachers will be monitored through 101 tutors, who will work both in person and online. This support will include guidance on key topics such as the development of planning, in accordance with the guidelines of the New Mexican School.

In the presence of Manuel Larena España, director of Educational Development, Itzel Flores Coral, one of the beneficiary tutors, expressed her enthusiasm for being part of this team, pointing out that being a tutor not only implies transmitting knowledge, but also vocation, love and passion for teaching to guide new generations of teachers, sharing experiences and learning with them.
