According to the World Bank, the 26 poorest countries in the world are more indebted than they have been since 2006. Accordingly, the affected economies are poorer today on average than before Corona, while the rest of the world has largely recovered. The study confirms a serious setback in the fight against extreme poverty.
Around 40 percent of the world’s poorest people live in the 26 countries. The annual per capita income is less than 1,145 dollars (around 1,047 euros). Economies are increasingly reliant on grants and near-interest-free loans as market financing has dried up. Natural disasters also hit countries hard.
