Greens start petition against blue National Council President

Under the title “No right-wing extremists at the top of the National Council” you can sign for this request, which the party advertised on X on Monday. The FPÖ emerged as the strongest force in the election around two weeks ago. Following current practice, the Freedom Party would have the right to nominate someone for this office.

Statements from the other parties suggest that this practice should be maintained. For example, the ÖVP supports the tradition according to which the force with the largest vote in the National Council should have the right to make proposals. Second President of the National Council Doris Bures joined the SPÖ in this. The NEOS do not rule out a liberal National Council President per se, but it depends on the person.

The Greens, on the other hand, do not want to accept this practice in parliament. Therefore they started under https://gruene.at/gegen-rechts/ a petition to prevent an FPÖ politician from becoming the head of the National Council. The aim is to call on the ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS to rethink, it is said.

The constituent meeting of the National Council is on October 24th. The candidates for the three-person executive board must be determined by then. According to the National Council’s rules of procedure, the President of the National Council must come from among the MPs and therefore have a mandate. It is not stipulated anywhere that the office goes to the party with the largest number of mandates, but it is common practice.
