Jakarta –
BYD’s plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has been registered in Indonesia. Is BYD interested in selling PHEV cars in Indonesia?
BYD doesn’t seem to only want to play in the purely battery-based electric car segment. Globally, BYD has plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology called DM-i technology.
It seems that the DM-i hybrid technology will enter Indonesia. As proof, BYD registered the design of a car with DM-i technology. The design patent is registered in the Official Industrial Design Gazette document No. 56/DI/2024 released by the Directorate of Copyright and Industrial Design, Directorate General of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

In the document, BYD COMPANY LIMITED registered the design of an SUV which is thought to have PHEV or DM-i technology. The registered design is identical to the BYD Song L DM-i PHEV car which was recently launched in China.
Head of PR & Government Relations PT BYD Motor Indonesia Luther Panjaitan said that basically BYD fully supports all types of energy transition initiatives determined by the government. Including battery-based pure electric cars or PHEVs.
“Indeed, when referring to the global determination of NEVs (new energy vehicles), this also includes PHEVs. And also the experience in several countries that PHEVs and EVs both play a high role in the energy transition, especially in areas with geographic & demographic conditions certain things,” said Luther to detikOto, Monday (14/10/2024).
Luther emphasized that BYD is a key player in the NEV industry. According to him, in terms of product line, BYD’s PHEV or DM-i technology cars could enter Indonesia.
“However, favorable policies are still needed that support competitiveness, especially if they are expected to be able to match the pricing level of ICE cars (conventional engine cars) in order to accelerate the transition,” he said.

BYD PHEVs Are Coming to Indonesia: What Does It Mean?
Well, well, well… it appears BYD, the darlings of the electric vehicle world, are shaking things up in Indonesia! Yes, you heard it right. BYD’s plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have officially registered their presence in the archipelago, raising eyebrows and pulses alike. Are they ready to conquer the market with their clever DM-i technology? Spoiler alert: it looks like a resounding ‘yes’!
Now, when we talk about BYD, they aren’t merely dipping their toes into the market; they’re cannonballing into the water! Their DM-i hybrid technology, which enthusiasts have been raving about, is primed to zoom into Indonesia. And just to give you a glimpse of their ambition, they’ve gone ahead and registered a design for an SUV that’s thought to sport this very technology. That’s right, folks — an SUV that’s more hybrid than a science lab experiment gone right!
But why stop at battery power alone? Luther Panjaitan, the head honcho of BYD’s PR & Government Relations in Indonesia, gleefully shared that the company truly supports all energy transition initiatives. Ah, a corporate voice filled with positivity! It’s as if they’re saying, “We’re here to save the planet, one plug-in at a time.”

What’s This DM-i Technology Anyway?
For the uninitiated, let’s break this down. The DM-i technology is basically BYD’s answer to hybrid vehicles. Think of it as the middle ground, a delightful sandwich between fully electric vehicles (EVs) and traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) cars. It’s like having your cake and eating it too — if your cake was guilt-free and came with zero emissions, of course!
So why all this fuss about PHEVs? Luther emphasized that in many countries, both PHEVs and EVs play a pivotal role in the energy transition. Here’s where geography and demographics make an entrance — in regions like Indonesia, where driving conditions may not always suit pure electric vehicles. So, yes folks, sometimes it’s not just about one solution fits all. It’s about mixing it up a bit, like a DJ at a wedding!
The Road Ahead for BYD in Indonesia
As ambitious as they are, BYD knows they can’t just roll in and expect everyone to drop their traditional cars like a bad habit. They need favorable policies and a competitive pricing strategy. Luther’s candid remarks hit the nail on the head; if they want to play in the big league, they need to match ICE vehicle prices. Let’s be real — if the price is right, even grandma might ditch her rusty sedan for a shiny new BYD!
To summarize, BYD is gearing up for a thrilling ride in Indonesia. With their PHEV technology, they’re looking to straddle the line between pure electric and conventional vehicles. If they get the pricing right and some support from local regulations, who knows? We might soon see a surge of these efficient beauties on Indonesian roads!
So, buckle up, folks! The future is looking green, and it might just be powered by BYD.
