Dodgers win Game 1 of National League Championship Series

The Dodgers had multiple absences in the pitches and despite this they managed to shut out the New York Mets with a resounding 9-0, giving the Angelenos the first point in the National League Championship Series and setting the new record of MLB in 33 scoreless innings, equaling the streak of the Baltimore Orioles in 1966.

While the Dodgers pitchers set the pace of the game, it was the batting offense that made the difference in the duel between New Yorkers and Angelenos.

Jack Flaherty‘s performance was exceptional with seven innings on the mound and only two hits allowed. In all this time he eliminated 6 rival players, plus those killed by Dan Hudson and Ben Casparius.

The last time the Dodgers conceded a run was in Game 3 against the San Diego Padres in the division series held a week ago.

On offense, Max Muncy opened the scoring with a single in the first and was accompanied by Shohei Ohtani with another in the second to put the Dodgers up five in the fourth.

It was quickly 6-0 with Freddie Freeman doing well in the fourth.

In total, three runs were scored in a single inning, the fourth, which meant a wall against the Metros, the New Yorkers could never overcome such authority.

Already in the eighth, the distance increased, with Mookie Betts personalizing a double that allowed Puerto Rican Enrique Hernánez, Kevin Kiermaier and Shohei Ohtani to score for the final 9-0.

There were six eliminated in total in the game on the Dodgers’ pitching side. Eight on the New York side, but on offense, neither the Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor nor Mark Vientos could fulfill their usual contribution at bat, leaving the Metros’ light blank.

Mets blacked out

From the fifth to the eighth inning, the Mets were unable to generate, and the final three runs in their eighth at-bat, due to Betts’ hitting, were insurmountable for the visitors.

The Dodgers’ dominance over their rivals in the last three games has been 19-0, tying the post-season record of 33 scoreless innings. You have to go back to 1966 to see the Orioles doing something similar.

This Sunday was one of the most complete games of the year for the Dodgers, and projecting it into a best-of-seven series, statistics say that 64% of the winners of the first game stay with this duel since the format was introduced. It’s in 2-3-2.

“Each of the pitchers have done their job excellently and have helped enhance the offensive part to make us feel comfortable to score,” Ohtani commented after the game.

The next duel between the Dodgers and the Mets will be this Monday, October 14, again at Dodger Stadium with the New Yorkers looking for an equalizer in the series. For the Californians it would be the first appearance in the world series since 2020, when they lifted the Major League Baseball (MLB) title.
