A FIDO Alliance announced that it is working on new specifications to allow secure portability of password keys (Passkeys) between different providers. Until now, it is worth highlighting, there is no defined standard for this type of movement — which means that the exchange often happens in an unprotected manner.

The specifications, called Credential Exchange Protocol (Credential Exchange Protocolor CXP) b Credential Exchange Format (Credential Exchange Formator CXF) will allow users to more easily and conveniently choose which credential management service they prefer to use.

It is an important and very welcome evolution, especially in cases of ecosystem exchange. If a user manages their passwords using the Passwords app (Passwords) from Apple on the iPhone, it is currently impossible to continue using the software when migrating to an Android smartphone, for example.

Still in the development phase and open to changes, the specifications, when approved, may be adopted by the various providers that are part of FIDO — among them, large companies such as Google, Microsoft, Samsung, 1Password and Apple itself.
