The US condemned the detention of Venezuelan opponents

The head of the US State Department for Latin America, Brian Nichols, condemned this Wednesday the arrests made against Venezuelan opponents Henry Alviárez and Dignora Hernández.

Through the social network X, he wrote: “We condemn the arbitrary detentions and arrest warrants issued today against members of the democratic opposition in Venezuela.”

Alviárez and Hernández were arrested for their alleged link with violent plans related to the elections on July 28, in which Maduro will seek a third consecutive six-year term in power.

In addition, arrest warrants were issued against seven other members of Vente Venezuela (VV), a group led by opposition leader María Corina Machado.

Brian Nichols considered that these arrests are “inconsistent” with the electoral agreements.

«Maduro’s increasing attacks against civil society and political actors are totally inconsistent with the commitments of the Barbados Agreement, but they will not stifle the democratic aspirations of the Venezuelan people. We call for the immediate release of these people and all those unjustly detained,” Nichols concluded.
