« When the diagnosis came in 2005, it was a blast, everything exploded. My brother Thibault is recognized as schizophrenic, reality is cracking for him, the family is shattered »remembers Gringe. The skin-deep actor and rapper, who has just launched his second album, Hypersensitiveevokes the clashes of recent years which have shaped him. “After the announcement, everything moved quite quickly. Although I stayed in Caen, where we lived, the rest of the family went to the South, where a place in a clinic became available, and my parents separated within the two years that followed. » Everyone did what they could, Gringe believes. “My father protected himself with a certain denial, my mother armed herself with courage, gathered information and surrounded herself with parents in the same situation, thanks to Unafam. »

To its 15,000 members, the National Union of Families and Friends of Sick and/or Mentally Disabled People (Unafam) offers peer support in 305 reception points, and a free online listening service. “These exchanges help break isolation and help the caregiver find the strength to move forward, fighting against feelings of helplessness, guilt and incomprehension”explains Isabelle Coulange, one of the association’s psychologists. “It’s also an opportunity to decipher a diagnosis and direct you to local resources”she continues. Loved ones also learn to take a step aside to find points of interface with the sick person, for example by telling them that we understand that it is so trying for them, or by setting their own limits.

“Sick of his sick brother”

Subtly, Gringe even went to the other side of the mirror to maintain contact, when he got closer to his brother by taking over from his exhausted mother. « One evening, Thibault described to me a young girl that only he saw, and the voices he heard. I just asked her about herself without judging. It was “schizophrenic” : a part of me was caught up in delirium, but the other did not adhere to it »recognizes the member of the tandem formed with Orelsan, Casseurs Flowteurs. Gringe ended up being « sick of his sick brother »depressed for a time, before bouncing back, traveling with Thibault, writing the book with four hands Together we bark in silence (Harper Collins, 2020) which comes out in paperback in December. And to also fully live his own life as an artist with the release of his first solo album, Moon Childsix years ago.
