“It’s a matter of waiting until Tuesday and everything will be clearer.” Giancarlo Giorgetti invites us to wait, to put a stop to the “drizzle of interpretations” that have accompanied the budget law in recent days. The day circled in red by the holder of the Mef coincides with the date on which the Council of Ministers will return to meet at Palazzo Chigi, which will have to examine the Budget Planning Document (Dpb), on the last day available to send the text to Brussels. Text that must contain the tables of the next financial statement, i.e. income and expenditure to be kept in balance. A job being finalized by the government which must find the resources necessary to complete the coverage of a maneuver that should be around 24 billion. Even through some sacrifice. And it is on this point that Giorgetti, speaking via video link at the «Festa del Foglio» in Florence, sends the second invitation, this time with a specific recipient: «Sacrifice means cutting expenses and avoiding waste, which many ministries and public bodies will also do, and many entities that live on public contributions and that must realize that every euro they spend is taken away from citizens and businesses who pay taxes.” As I announced in CDM «to my colleagues – remember -, we need to make sacrifices, give up some programs, perhaps totally useless ones that survive from the past. I urged them to make proposals, if they don’t make them it will be up to the Minister of Economy to play the bad guy, and I will do so.”

However, the one who does not seem to want to comply with the MEF’s directives is the deputy prime minister and minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini: «The budget session begins and therefore today I meet my colleague Giorgetti to defend my budget». Not exactly an opening. In the conversation, however, League sources let it be known that the two “spoke to take stock of the situation” and that “there will be no new taxes but protection of salaries”. While waiting to understand how much the government will be able to raise through the spending review (according to rumors the aim is for 2-3 billion, a figure which however is not confirmed by the Mef at the moment), Giorgetti assures that in the budget «there will certainly be no more taxes. We are doing less taxes, we are not promising it. The cut in the tax wedge that everyone claimed was temporary will become structural.” Along with this there will be a cut to the Irpef, interventions to support healthcare, birth incentives, renewal of public contracts, support for large families. The budget law, the minister reminds us, «will have to facilitate families with children, because they face greater expenses than those who do not have them. What we need to start from is that those who have children of young or school age incur more expenses. These expenses deserve better treatment. I hope that on Tuesday we will be able to give a signal in this direction.” Not only that, adds Giorgetti, «we are moving to perfect fiscal incentives for those who want to stay in work. There are people who prefer to work rather than retire.”

Pensions, extra profits, excise duties and cigarettes: the maneuver between fake and reality

Words that trigger the immediate reaction of the president of the M5s, Giuseppe Conte. «On pensions, the Meloni government sends young people on the Titanic – is the attack of the former prime minister -. But shouldn’t they have canceled Fornero? No! Now they propose the “never end of work”. Every day the most disparate ideas come out, the certainty is that there will be new cuts and new taxes.” «Dear Meloni, make yourself heard and clarify why we cannot continue with this daily drip. The Italians have already given – concludes Conte -, it is the moment in which suffering must be imposed on those who make great profits, starting from the arms industry and banking companies. Demonstrate that you have the citizens’ good at heart.”
