“We must strengthen health security by supporting all countries, especially the least developed”

We all attach importance to our health and that of our loved ones. Yet, despite the great progress made in the fields of science and innovation, it is threatened, even in the most developed countries. As health leaders, we are responsible for ensuring the health and safety of our citizens, and we must do so equitably. No one should be left behind.

We know that this investment is necessary to help secure and increase the wealth of countries and build trust in governments, global institutions and multilateral approaches to promoting health for all. One of the most important measures is to support and strengthen national health systems, as all countries have committed to doing by subscribing to the Sustainable Development Goals.

But we know that this is no longer enough – all countries must invest in their common security and protection: no one is safe until everyone is safe. Security can only be achieved by looking beyond borders; on a regional and global scale. We must strengthen health systems and health security around the world, supporting all countries, especially the least developed. We have expressed this through declarations and actions at the UN and other multilateral institutions.

Flexible, reliable and efficient

To make the world healthier and safer for all, one of the most cost-effective and sustainable steps is to invest in a technically and operationally strong World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO, with 194 Member States, has an exceptional scope and mandate to act as a guiding force in global health, bringing together scientific experts, national decision-makers and health partners.

But to succeed, WHO must have the means to be flexible, reliable and efficient. This is why Member States have decided to invest in the Organization and support WHO’s historic first investment cycle.

The WHO investment cycle, which will be at the center of Global Health Summit who stands, Monday October 14, in Berlinprovides a unique opportunity for countries to come together to support global health. Every dollar invested in WHO brings in thirty-five and can help save forty million lives over the next four years. Full and sustainable funding will enable WHO to help countries improve the health of their communities, making them stronger and more prosperous.
