A call between Berri and Macron discusses “efforts” to stop the Israeli aggression against Lebanon

Lebanon – French President Emmanuel Macron discussed, with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, on Saturday, efforts to stop the Israeli aggression.

The Lebanese News Agency reported that the call dealt with “political efforts to stop the Israeli aggression.”

In this regard, Berri stressed “the official Lebanese position, adopted by the government, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the deployment of the Lebanese army up to the international border in accordance with UN Resolution 1701.”

Recently, Berri and Mikati held meetings with Western officials, including the French Foreign Minister, about a solution initiative that includes working to reduce the escalation between Lebanon and Israel and launching a new path of negotiations that ends with the implementation of International Resolution 1701.

The terms of the initiative include a four-week truce initially, which includes a cessation of military actions between the two sides until a complete ceasefire and the provision of guarantees regarding reconstruction and the return of the displaced, followed by opening the land border demarcation path, and strengthening the capabilities of the Lebanese army to monitor the borders.

Security Council Resolution No. 1701, issued in August 2006, calls for a complete cessation of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel, and the establishment of a zone free of weapons and militants between the Blue Line (separating Lebanon and Israel) and the Litani River in southern Lebanon, with the exception of forces affiliated with the Lebanese Army and UNIFIL forces. Internationalism.

Macron and Berri’s call, according to the Lebanese Agency, discussed “the efforts made by France to hold an international conference to support Lebanon in confronting the humanitarian crisis resulting from the displacement of more than one million and 200 thousand Lebanese, in addition to how the country can help in providing relief to them.”

Last Wednesday, Paris announced that, on October 24, it will host an international conference on the crisis in Lebanon, which will focus on the internal political situation and humanitarian aid to this Arab country.

While France calls, through the statements of its officials, for an end to what it calls “hostilities” between the parties in Israel and Lebanon, it continues to emphasize what it considers “Israel’s right to defend itself in light of the law.”

The French presidency also confirmed, a few days ago, that Paris is “committed to Israel’s security,” and announced “the mobilization of military resources in the Middle East to confront the Iranian threat,” as it put it, after the retaliatory missile attack carried out by Iran against Israel at the beginning of this October.

Since last September 23, Israel has expanded the scope of the genocide it has been committing in Gaza since October 7, 2023, to include most of Lebanon’s regions, including the capital, Beirut, through air raids of unprecedented violence and intensity. It also began a ground incursion into its south, striking the wall. With international warnings and UN resolutions.

These raids, as of Saturday evening, resulted in 1,437 dead and 4,123 wounded, including a large number of women and children, and more than 1,340,000 displaced people, according to Anatolia’s monitoring of official Lebanese data.

Hezbollah responds daily with missiles, drones, and artillery shells targeting military sites and settlements, and while Israel announces some of its human and material losses, military censorship imposes a strict blackout on most of the losses, according to observers.
