Tryg expects a record number of cabin damages this year

– The number of water and frost damage to cabins has doubled in the last two years, and Tryg Forsikring expects a record number of cabin damages this year, the insurance company writes in a press release.

Part of the background is changes in weather and climate, with more torrential rain and longer periods of frost, also where the cabins stand.

– This means that cabin owners must rethink and become better at preventing damage, especially damage that occurs in winter. It is more important than before to ensure that all water is turned off and drained before leaving the cabin for the winter, says communications advisor Torbjørn Brandeggen at Tryg.

The insurance industry is likely to record around 13,000 water and frost damage in cabins this year, an increase of 125 per cent since 2022. The costs could reach a record high NOK 750 million, according to figures from Finans Norge.

– Many cabin owners turn off all electricity for the winter to save money, but this can quickly pay off if it ends up with frost damage. If you have the opportunity, we strongly recommend acquiring a smart cabin system that allows you to keep an eye on and adjust the temperature in the cabin if necessary. It is also a good idea to have sensors that can alert you in the event of a water leak, says Brandeggen.
