Hindu extremists demand a boycott of the film ‘Lal Singh Chadha’

There was a dialogue in the Hollywood movie Forrest Gump that ‘Life is like a box of chocolates because you never know what you’re going to get.’

Now a Bollywood remake of the film ‘<a href="https://www.archyde.com/aamir-khans-kingdom-agenda-behind-campaign-against-movie/" title="Aamir Khan's Kingdom | agenda behind campaign against movie”>Lal Singh Chadha‘ is under threat of boycott due to a years-old statement by its Muslim actor Aamir Khan.

The boycott campaign is the latest example of discrimination against minorities in India, showing how the crackdown on minorities from Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Modi‘s government to Bollywood’s Muslim superstars. are feeling

‘Lal Singh Chadha’ could be one of the biggest Bollywood movies of 2022.

This is largely due to its lead star Aamir Khan, 57, who is one of the most recognizable actors in the Indian film industry with past blockbusters like ‘Three Idiots’ in 2009 and ‘Dangal’ in 2016.

But ahead of the August 11 release of ‘Lal Singh Chadha’, the internet has been abuzz with clips from an interview Aamir Khan gave in 2015 in which he expressed a sense of growing intolerance and fear in Modi’s India.

Aamir Khan had said: ‘My wife is afraid for her children. She fears what will happen to our surroundings. She is afraid to read newspapers every day.’

More than 200,000 posts have been shared on Twitter with the hashtag ‘Boycott Lal Singh Chadha’, mostly by supporters of Modi’s Hindu nationalist ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

One tweet said: ‘Aamir Khan married two Hindu women, yet named his children Junaid, Azad and Ira. These are enough reasons to boycott Lal Singh Chadha, which is essentially a production of Bollywood’s ‘Love Jihad’ club.

The marriage of Muslim men to Hindu women is called ‘Love Jihad’ by right-wing groups in India.

Aamir Khan, popularly known as Mr. Perfectionist, is credited for breaking away from the traditional Bollywood style of singing and dancing and making films on social and cultural issues.

He also hosted a TV chat show where he discussed touchy topics like rape, domestic violence and corruption.

After the boycott campaign, Aamir Khan had to make a statement to prove his patriotism.

Speaking to the local media this week, he said, ‘I feel sad that some people think that I am a person who does not like India. It is not so. Please don’t boycott my film, please watch my film.’

After his statement, observers say that the pressure the Muslim megastar is now feeling is a reflection of the growing intolerance, backwardness and treatment of minorities in India.

An Indian commentator, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of being targeted, told AFP: ‘There is no doubt that Aamir Khan was targeted by those who spread hatred against Muslims. going.’

Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party has its roots in the extremist Hindu militant organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which supports ‘Hindutva’ and wants to make India a Hindu-only state.

Massacres of dozens of Muslims and other hate crimes by Hindu mobs in the name of cow protection have instilled fear in the 20 Muslim population.

Social media is full of misinformation claiming that the Muslim population will soon outnumber Hindus or that the Muslim minority is a traitorous nation supported by Pakistan.

Critics say that after Modi came to power in 2014, the trend of making films in support of nationalism and Hinduism has gradually increased in Bollywood as per the government narrative.

2019 ‘PM Narendra Modi’ was made on Modi’s life. There has also been a recent spate of military-themed films that are nationalist, violence-filled stories of Hindu soldiers’ bravery against enemies outside and inside India.

After the release of ‘The Kashmir Files’ this year, the demand for revenge killing of Muslims gained momentum.

Film critic and writer Anna MM Vetikad said that ‘India’s methods of subjugating Muslims and Christians to the majority community include demonizing these minorities and constantly demanding proof of their patriotism.

According to him, the change of this trend is expected to be very little. ‘The tragedy of India is that Bollywood is full of people who are apathetic, opportunistic or fearful.’
