Colombia expresses concern about events in Venezuela

The foreign minister in charge of Colombia, Luis Gilberto Murillo, addressed the recent events in Venezuela after the Prosecutor’s Office announced the arrest warrant for nine opponents, including the campaign manager and right-hand woman of María Corina Machado, for alleged acts of violence to destabilize to the government.

Murillo said in one of the days of «Government with the People«, that Colombia »“has played a constructive role and supports compliance with the Barbados agreements and the progress that is being made in this dialogue”.

There it was established that sanctions against Venezuela and against any country would be eliminated, but also that free, fair, competitive, transparent elections would be held with the participation of all political forces.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge expressed Colombia’s concern about these events and reiterated the country’s commitment to a solution that accompanies Venezuelan society, respecting its sovereignty and autonomous decisions.

The acting foreign minister emphasized that Colombia has maintained contact with representatives of the Venezuelan regime and the opposition to evaluate the general situation of the Venezuelan political process, especially within the framework of the agreements reached in Barbados.

We have been in contact with both our ambassador in Venezuela, as well as with Foreign Minister Yvan Gil, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela, and representatives of the opposition to evaluate the situation, the situation we have today, and express our concern about the effects that the latest events may have”, he detailed in his speech.

It should be noted that the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, has maintained a certain distance from the elections and has avoided commenting on the matter.
