Salmond was leader of the SNP from 1990 to 2000 and then from 2004 to 2014. He was First Minister of Scotland from 2007 to 2014 and was central to the country’s independence movement, which culminated in the 2014 independence referendum, in which a majority voted to remain in the union with Great Britain.
As a result of the election defeat, Salmond resigned as First Minister and was succeeded by Nicola Sturgeon.
In 2018, he resigned as leader of the SNP following accusations of sexual abuse, of which he was later acquitted. In 2021 he formed the Alba party which he led until his death.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer calls Salmond a monumental figure in British politics and says he leaves a lasting legacy.
Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak writes on X that he disagreed with Salmond on constitutional issues, but that “there is no doubt about his passion for politics”.
Former First Minister of Scotland Humza Yousaf says Salmond helped make the SNP a dominant political force.
