Venezuela calls CIA chief’s visit to Guyana a “provocation”

As a new provocation, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Nicolás Maduro administration cataloged, Yván Gil, most recent visit to Guyana of the CIA chief William Burns.

Through his account on X, Gil stated that “the deployment of US intelligence is a real threat“, which is why the tension between the neighboring country and Venezuela could increase again in the face of the controversy that continues over the Essequibo.

This is nothing more than an escalation in provocations against our country, interfering, together with the US Southern Command, in the territorial controversy”, he noted.

In the same way, the Venezuelan official assured that the meeting between Burns and the president of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, “It is totally contrary to the spirit of the Argyle Declaration”, which was signed in mid-December 2023, when the Guyanese president met with Maduro in order to mitigate tensions between both nations.

Gil was emphatic when assuring that the visit of the head of the CIA is a “a sample of the perverse tentacles of Exxon Mobil (which operates in the disputed territory under authorization from Guyana), which dangerously insists on creating a dangerous situation in our zone of peace”.

We must remember that last week, Vladimir Padrino Lópezwho serves as Maduro’s Minister of Defense, stated that the Bolivarian National Armed Force (FANB), could respond proportionally to what it could consider a threat in waters near the Essequibo, as BioChile highlights.

Both nations agreed to hold direct talks in order to achieve a peaceful solution to the territorial controversy, with the mediation of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
