Statement by the 10 elected members of the Security Council regarding the attack on UNIFIL forces

The statement called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law and the safety and security of UNIFIL personnel and its headquarters.

The statement stressed that any deliberate attack on peacekeeping forces constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution No. 1701 issued in 2006 and must stop immediately.

The statement stressed the need to support UNIFIL forces and emphasized its role in supporting regional stability.

The 10 countries also expressed their deep concern about the high number of civilian casualties and suffering, the destruction of civilian infrastructure, and the increasing numbers of internally displaced people in Lebanon.

The statement called for an immediate ceasefire, strict adherence to international humanitarian law, and full respect and implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701.

It is worth noting that the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon “UNIFIL” announced today that two of its members were injured in two explosions near an observation point in southern Lebanon, and one of them was transferred to the hospital in Tyre, pointing out the collapse of several protection walls at their United Nations site No. 1-31. Near the Blue Line in Labouneh when an Israeli bulldozer collided with the perimeter of the site and Israeli tanks moved near it. Our peacekeepers remained at the site, and a UNIFIL rapid reaction force was sent to assist and reinforce the site.”

Yesterday, Thursday, a UNIFIL source announced that two soldiers belonging to the international forces were slightly injured as a result of an Israeli bombing of one of the UNIFIL sites in southern Lebanon.

A UN source reported that Israeli forces opened fire on 3 UNIFIL positions in southern Lebanon.
