Continuously being targeted by Israeli soldiers, why don’t UNIFIL troops fight back? – VIVA.co.id

Indonesia’s Response to the Israeli Attack on UNIFIL: A Comedy of Errors

So, let’s get this straight. On October 10, 2024, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) took a break from their usual schedule of… well, you know, living their best military life, to attack the UN Temporary Forces Headquarters in Lebanon. That’s right—a bunch of heavily armored tanks rumbled in like they were auditioning for the next Fast and Furious movie. Two Indonesian National Army (TNI) members sustained minor injuries, and we’re left here asking: why didn’t anyone respond? Did they think it wasn’t Netflix-worthy?

What’s Happening Here?

It’s a bit of a head-scratcher, isn’t it? The only activity that seems to be happening at this UN base is mother nature recalling the classic “let’s collapse some walls” routine. Not as thrilling as a high-speed chase, but interesting enough to warrant a VIVA Military article, I suppose!

The Obligation to Protect

Now, according to UN Security Council Resolution 1701—from what I can gather, at least—it essentially gives UN troops the green light to respond to threats. And here we are: the IDF blasting away, snagging their targets like they’re playing a real-life version of Call of Duty, while UNIFIL seems to be on a coffee break. I mean, what’s it going to take for these guys to step up? A dance-off? It wouldn’t be the worst idea, given the historical context.

Indonesia’s Commitment

Credit where credit is due, though. Indonesia is contributing significantly to UNIFIL—1,231 TNI soldiers, to be exact. For a force that claims to be prepared for everything from peacekeeping to policing, you’d think they’d be a bit quicker on the draw when someone rolls up with tanks! If you can’t answer fire with fire, what’s next? A stern letter?

Where Do We Go From Here?

So here we have it—a serious attack on international peacekeeping forces, where Indonesian soldiers are now part of a fairly exclusive club of injured peacekeepers. Perhaps they’ll swap stories about dodging “friendly” fire over tea in the hospital.

Clearly, this isn’t just a military exercise. Indonesia has every right to be concerned and respond vigorously. The big question still looms: why didn’t the UN forces react in accordance with their mandate? Are we facing a case of “Too long; didn’t react”? Well, if responses were measured in action films, we’ve hit an awkward low on the chart.

Conclusion

In conclusion, if there’s anything to take away from this episode, it’s that we’re in a complicated world where expectations sometimes don’t meet reality. The Israeli military seems to be treating UNIFIL’s headquarters like their local playground, while Indonesian troops and the operational mandate stand at a crossroads.

Let’s just hope the next episode in this saga isn’t as explosive as a Michael Bay film—or perhaps it should be, to finally get someone to react!

UNIFIL reserves the right to take all necessary actions in the territory where its forces are deployed, according to its capabilities.

In SC Resolution 1701 emphasized that this response was related to the task of ensuring that UNIFIL’s operational areas were not used for hostile activities of any kind.
