The African Boxing Confederation’s support for the International Federation represents a surprising and disappointing decision for Algerian boxer Iman Khalif and for the Algerian Federation and the Olympic Committee, which announced a few days ago their withdrawal from the International Federation after the Iman Khalif crisis.
Last Saturday, the Algerian Olympic Committee officially decided to withdraw from the International Boxing Federation in the midst of the allegations that spread recently regarding boxer Iman Khalif.
The President of the African Boxing Confederation, Iyasu Wassan, announced his support for the International Boxing Federation against the International Olympic Committee, following the uproar that arose over the “sexual eligibility” of Algerian boxer Iman Khalif.
Wassan said in a press statement issued by the International Boxing Federation yesterday evening, Thursday: “As President of the African Boxing Confederation, I fully express my firm support for the International Boxing Federation.”
He added: “We strongly oppose the injustice and interference by the International Olympic Committee in the affairs of both the International Boxing Federation and the Confederation of African Football.”
Previous media reports claimed that the International Boxing Federation had suspended Iman Khalif for life, which was proven to be incorrect.
It is noteworthy that Iman Khalif won the gold medal in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after defeating Chinese boxer Yang Liu.
