PTA’s statement on blocking VPN in the country

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) officials have stated that a complete ban on virtual private networks (VPNs) is not feasible.

The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology assembled in Islamabad under Senator Palusha​ Mohammadzai Khan’s direction.

Pakistan⁤ Software Export Board representatives showed in their ⁤presentation that Pakistan’s contribution to global ‍IT is less than 0.04%. Last year, Pakistan’s IT field exhibited⁤ a ⁤20% increase in growth. The ⁢United States claims ​54% of ⁢Pakistan’s IT exports, Europe 21%, and Gulf states 10%. ‌‍ A job creation program⁢ worth one⁣ billion rupees is imminent.

During the meeting, a PTA enforcement officer reported a ⁤disruption of⁢ internet service on June 18, 2024, because of⁣ a‌ severed⁤ SMW-4 fiber optic cable near ‍Karachi’s ‍shore. Repair work is ongoing, but a finish date is still undetermined. ⁣ Another problem with ⁢the AAE-1 undersea cable has surfaced, with an expected⁣ fix by August‍ 27. The country operates seven cables, each with an ‌average capacity of ‌3.5 ‌terabytes, reaching‌ 7.5⁣ terabytes during peak evening usage.

PTA ⁢officials ​explained that Twitter’s ‌access‌ limitations originate from the Ministry of Interior’s ​orders due‍ to‌ Twitter’s ‍failure to comply with requests ‌regarding unsuitable⁢ content.
