Unspeakable Devastation: Innocence Lost in a Moment of Unthinkable Horror

Seven children were killed today by an “explosive device” in Deraa province in Syria, state media reported.

“Seven children” were killed and “two other people were injured, including a woman, when an explosive device planted by terrorists” exploded in the city of Sana’min, the official Sana news agency reported, citing a police source.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights gave a different account, saying “eight children of different ages were killed and one wounded” in the explosion.

“Members of paramilitary groups” are accused of planting the explosive device targeting an unnamed person in the area.

Deraa was the birthplace of the 2011 uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, but returned to Damascus’ control in 2018 under a Russian-backed ceasefire deal.

Since then, the province has been at the mercy of killings, conflicts and difficult living conditions.

Since it broke out in 2011, the war in Syria has killed more than 507,000 people, displaced millions and plunged the country into a deep economic and humanitarian crisis.
