Brazil registered a significant advance in cybersecurity maturity, according to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI). The report, published in September 2024, classifies the country as the second most mature in cybersecurity in the Americas, behind only the United States. The ITU highlights that this progress reflects the Brazilian government’s ongoing efforts to improve its digital security policies, strengthen its infrastructure and improve international cooperation in the area.
The ranking highlights the public policies implemented by Brazil, with the participation of bodies such as the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel). The agency, together with other government entities, has been responsible for coordinating actions that aim to protect society against cyber threats. Among the main initiatives are the creation of the National Cybersecurity Policy (PNCiber) and the National Cybersecurity Committee (CNCiber), in addition to adherence to the Budapest Convention, an international treaty that standardizes the fight against cybercrimes.
The ITU also highlighted that Brazil’s classification in Group 1, considered a model in cybersecurity, reflects the strategic actions that the country has been taking. Among these measures, the development of incident response centers and the creation of specific regulations to ensure the protection of critical infrastructures also stand out.
Furthermore, Markswell Coelho, coordinator of IBSEC – Brazilian Cybersecurity Institute, states that “international cooperation plays a fundamental role in this advancement. Brazil has collaborated with organizations such as the International Telecommunications Union, strengthening ties for the exchange of information and cybersecurity practices.”
With these results, Brazil positions itself as a regional leader in digital security, serving as a reference for other nations in Latin America. Markswell Coelho concludes: “The continuity of robust public policies and the development of new technological solutions will be crucial to ensuring that the country remains ahead in the fight against cybercrime.”
