Speaking on the show CONNECTIONS on ERTNews, he referred to the European directive that calls on member states to determine the minimum wage in an objective manner, while strengthening collective bargaining and contracts. “Is there a European directive that tells the member states what to do? It says two things. First, it gives directions on how to objectively define the minimum wage and, on the other hand, to strengthen collective negotiations and labor contracts,” emphasized Ms. Kerameos.
He also added that a scientific committee has been set up to propose a mathematical formula, based on which the minimum wage will increase from 2028. “The finding provides for the establishment of a mathematical formula, which will predict how the minimum wage will increase, taking into account both inflation and the productivity of our country’s economy”. The important point, as he explained, is that “the minimum wage cannot be reduced, even if these rates change. we want on the one hand to protect the workers and on the other hand to have predictability in general in the economy as to where the minimum wage is going” and he added “the conclusion contains proposals on how to strengthen the role of the social partners. At the same time, the Minister explained the procedure that will be followed: “Today I will send letters to all the social partners to discuss this conclusion. We will listen to their thoughts, suggestions and concerns. Afterwards, the conclusion will go to the Council of Ministers and a final decision will be made. This will be done in the next two months” and added “I emphasize based on the finding, there can be no reduction in the minimum wage. We are only talking about how the increase will be done to protect our most vulnerable fellow citizens”.
Increases in pensions
The Minister also referred to the increases in pensions, clarifying that the Ministry will proceed immediately to correct the solidarity levy, which is burdened by some pensioners due to the increases. “We want to correct the fact that someone, while receiving an increase in their pension, because of the solidarity contribution ends up with a reduction.” The relevant provisions, as he noted, will soon be submitted to the Parliament. “The new pensions are being prepared in December. I remind you that pensions are paid earlier, so the January pensions will be paid at the end of December, which means that we have to bring these provisions to Parliament in the next period of time,” said Mrs. Kerameos.
Initiatives for the return of Greek scientists
Mrs. Kerameos also spoke about the government’s effort to return Greek scientists from abroad through the rebrain program. “We have many brilliant minds who left during the crisis years and are now looking for a professional opportunity to return to our country,” he said.
