Seeds of Opportunity: Cultivating a Future Where Hunger is a Distant Memory

Asunción, IP Agency.- The commemorative event for World Food Day 2024, which is celebrated every October 16, was carried out by the Ministries of Public Health and Social Development and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Paraguay, at the Institute of the Central Bank of Paraguay. For this year, FAO chose the motto “Right to Food, for a better life and future.”

During this event, progress of the Zero Hunger program, promoted by the National Government, was presented; Topics such as Food and Nutrition Education, public policies on food and nutrition implemented by the MSPBS, and experiences in business roundtables for MSMEs and Family Farming within the framework of the Zero Hunger program were focused on.

The Minister of Public Health, María Teresa Barán, highlighted the importance of the right to healthy eating through the Zero Hunger program, in order to guarantee that children and families learn to cook in a nutritious way. This program not only focuses on providing meals, but also educating about healthy eating in schools and homes.

He highlighted that one of the modalities used through the system (Zero Hunger), of the professional education service, is to teach Paraguayan families to cook healthily in schools. He maintained that this will mean that these families that are receiving the training will be able to cook not only healthily in schools but also healthily in Paraguayan families.

He added that they seek to combat both hunger and obesity, promoting the consumption of fruits and vegetables and breastfeeding. He also highlighted the collaboration between institutions to ensure that all Paraguayans have access to safe and healthy food, working towards a better future.

For her part, the director of the National Institute of Food and Nutrition-INAN, Elsi Ovelar, pointed out that despite progress in access to adequate food, malnutrition problems persist, especially in vulnerable populations. He highlighted childhood malnutrition and a worrying trend towards overweight and obesity in schoolchildren.

Likewise, he emphasized the need for joint work to design policies that improve the quality of life of the population.

The day also included a review of the School Feeding programs in the region, addressed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations-FAO.

The commemorative activities for World Food Day will take place throughout the month of October, promoted by the Ministries of Health, Social Development, Agriculture and Livestock, Women, the National Institute of Food and Nutrition (INAN), CONADA, as well as the National University of Asunción (UNA) and the FAO.

World Food Day aims to raise awareness of the problem of world hunger, promote food security and nutrition, as well as encourage global action to eradicate hunger.

This day highlights the importance of the right to food, which is recognized by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and seeks to promote access to adequate food for all people.

Food is the third most basic human need after air and water: everyone should have the right to adequate food. Human rights such as the right to food, life and liberty, work and education are recognized by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and two legally binding international conventions, says the Ministry of Public Health.
