Microplastics, a risk for the environment and health

It is now estimated that 10% of all plastics produced since their invention have ended their life in the oceans, where they degrade into micro and nanometric particles. All living species, from the smallest like zooplankton to the largest like whales, can ingest them. ANSES is therefore carrying out work to assess the quantity and nature of these plastic particles. It also studies the level of exposure of humans and the risks to their health.

Stressed, like a fish in water

Faced with changes in ecosystems, fish try to adapt. ANSES researchers integrate these issues into their work to better understand the risks weighing on these aquatic animals. Listen again to the episode of our Zootopian podcast season 2: “Stressed, like a fish in water”, with Thierry Morin, head of the fish virology, immunology and ecotoxicology unit at Anses and Morgane Danian, project manager scientist in immuno-ecotoxicology in this same unit.

Impact of chemicals on corals

Coral reefs are home to nearly 100,000 species. These ecosystems, among the richest on the planet, are unfortunately seriously threatened by global warming. Added to this is pollution linked to human activities leading to the presence of numerous chemical substances in the oceans.

Preventing Ostreopsis poisoning on the coast

Ostreopsis is a microscopic algae of tropical origin which arrived in the Mediterranean around twenty years ago. In France, its distribution area is expanding, with a presence on the Basque coast for several years. ANSES recommends a set of measures to protect populations who are most exposed, in particular professionals working on or near beaches.
