Beneath the Surface: The Smoldering Embers of Italy’s Unrest

Matteo Piantedosi makes a point about security in Italy. In an interview with Messaggero, the Minister of the Interior expressed himself as follows after the unauthorized demonstration in support of Palestine, held over the weekend, on the anniversary of 7 October 2023 which marks one year of conflict in the Middle East: “There are no it is specific information on hostile actions being organized on our national territory. However, as was most recently seen in Saturday’s demonstration, there is a growing radicalization of some positions and the clear suggestion of some to ride the issues of the crisis that arose with the attacks of 7 October last with the aim of renewing behavior and destabilization projects , creating a climate of tension. All this has forced us to raise all prevention and protection activities to the highest level in defense of sensitive objectives. The police forces, as always, have prepared services and measures with the aim of avoiding any possible critical issues, especially on the occasion of an anniversary like this”.

The accomplices of October 7th. The square cheers Hamas and the left remains silent

On the tensions in Italy, on the presence of cells or lone wolves in the territory, for the Minister of the Interior “the risk of individual actions has always represented the main concern of the security apparatus precisely because they are more insidious and more difficult to intercept preventively. The commitment to maximum prevention implemented so far has been of great importance, just to mention one figure, since last October 7th we have removed 90 people from our territory who represented a security risk”. Regarding the demonstration banned by the Interior Ministry on Saturday, the minister believes that “the facts have shown that we were right in deciding on the ban. It was a decision based on objective elements thanks to which it was possible to prevent groups of violent people from merging even more easily into a significantly larger demonstration, to achieve the only real objective of expressing violence. And this was already clear from the proclamations that had accompanied some advance warnings of the demonstration, even with unacceptable references to the desire to celebrate a massacre. By calmly containing the demonstrators, the police forces saved the center of Rome from probable violence and damage that would have been difficult to control. In the images we have seen there is proof of the validity of the reasoning behind the issuing of the ban”.

That guilty silence from the left

On possible connections between the tensions in Italy and the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, Piantedosi underlines how “it is above all in relation to the worsening of the crisis in the Middle East that we are seeing clear repercussions on our country, like what is happening somewhat in the whole world. As mentioned, this constitutes the main factor of concern regarding possible growing processes of Islamist radicalization and because it represents a call to action from those belonging to the various areas of antagonism, always looking for themes to address. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, however, exposes us to all the risks of a hybrid and propaganda war that can affect us all and NATO”.
