Beyond Surface Level: An Immersive Exploration at the Museum of Outsider Art

The exhibition space is a journey of self-discovery

The exhibition “From the Inside” is based on Carl Gustav Jung’s approach to personality and creativity, one of the pioneers of analytical psychology, and his ideas are complemented by the access of theorist Alain de Botton, who invites us to accept art as a phenomenon with healing power.

According to the curators of “From the Inside” – art therapist, art researcher Aldona Dapkutė, psychotherapist Brigita Kaleckaitė and art researcher Deima Žuklytė-Gasperaitienė – the exhibition will be able to be meaningfully experienced not only by visitors who want to use all the tools provided by the combination of art and psychology for self-knowledge, but also by those who will be exclusively interested in one or the other of these two subjects.

“Our goal is to reveal how art affects emotional health and how we respond when we encounter the works. We create the entirety of the exhibition in such a way that the viewer has the opportunity to establish a personal relationship with the work itself, with what it speaks about, and feel how the form speaks to him,” shared the curators.

Visitors to “Inside” will be greeted by a space structure reminiscent of the mythical Hero’s journey, and the themes of the exhibition sections will bring to new life several CGJung archetypes – Ego, Persona, Shadow and Self. Meanwhile, the artistic and psychotherapeutic questions accompanying the exhibition will connect both areas like Ariadne’s thread.

Presents installations specially created for the exhibition

In the exhibition, among the works of two hundred Lithuanian artists, there are two works specially created for this exhibition: the audiovisual installation “Power line” by Elena Kairytė, a creator of cinema and interdisciplinary art, and the light installation “Minčnoi debesis” by the artist and architect Jurga Marcinauskytė.

According to the creators of the exhibition “From the Inside”, it was important to consider situations when difficulties break and thoughts of ending life arise in a wide range of psychological topics. In the context of the exhibition, the theme of suicide is subtly touched upon as a borderline state on the other side of the emotional health spectrum.

Director Elena Kairytė’s installation “Tension line” will invite visitors to stay and reflect on this complex issue, help to better understand and notice the circumstances, reasons, impulses of suicide and know how to recognize the signs, react to them, feel understood, less alone, and not stigmatize yourself and others feeling well

Meanwhile, the last stop of the exhibition is the space “Mintųi debesis” created by J.Marcinauskaitė for relaxation and meditation. The light installation made of ecological materials will invite visitors to take their time to leave, to experience the feelings of fullness, coziness and warmth, to immerse themselves in their thoughts and reflections after the exhibition. The installation and the entire space will be accompanied by concentration-stimulating music by the exhibition’s composer, Karolina Kapustaitė.

Anxiety, biting satire and sweet Hollywood in the opening MO Marathon

As usual, the opening of the MO Museum’s major exhibition will be marked by MORathon, a program of events on Saturday, October 12, centered around the themes of emotional health that complement the exhibition. They will spread in meetings with the artists of the exhibition, reports and conversations, and in the evening will include the impressions of performance and live music.

1 p.m. The marathon program will be opened by a conversation between film critic Monika Gimbutaitė and director Elena Kairyte, who created an installation specially for the exhibition “From the Inside”, which will take place in the exhibition space. A series of reports and talks in the MO event hall at 1 p.m. 40 minutes will start with the presentation of art researcher, art therapist Aldona Dapkutė, “Art – a guarantee of sanity?”, which will spread the influence of art on a person’s psychological state more widely.

Sociologist dr. Milda Pivoriūtė will share her insights about the recently widely publicized title of the happiest youth in the world for Lithuanian youth – in the report “The happiest youth in the world – is it really?”, she will explore the phenomena of happiness and happiness, the pitfalls of their research and the dangers of generalizations. Meanwhile, journalist Urtė Karalaitė will talk with psychologists Aurelija Auškalnyte and Mykolas Krisčiūnas about the spreading epidemic of loneliness in search of an answer on how to deal with the feeling of loneliness for modern people.

Anxiety about the future – the political or economic situation, climate change and other cataclysms – is another very relevant topic for modern society, which psychologist Gediminas Tumėnas and psychotherapists Dainius Jakučionis and Rasa Bieliauskaitė will tackle during the MOrathon.

Benas Lastauskas and Rokas Eltermans, who are active in them, will offer a sharp look at an inseparable part of life – social networks – and they do not spare criticism either of the social networks themselves or of people’s behavior in them. B. Lastauskas and R. Elterman will be interviewed by sociologist dr. Milda Pivoriūtė.

at 5 p.m. 20 minutes the talks will once again move to the large exhibition hall of the MO Museum – art critic Monika Krikštopaitytė will talk to the artist Andrii Ermin, and after a short break at 7 p.m. 30 minutes a performance by Nancie Naive (artist Emilė Skolevičiūtė) will take place here, inviting you to see through the enchanting mask of the Hollywood superstar. The closing chord of the evening in the MO hall is a concert by the psychedelic rock band “Garbanots”.
