Hope Revived: Pioneering Outpatient Program Transforms Lives of 200 Addiction Warriors

Asunción, IP Agency.- With the implementation of the SUMAR Plan, the public health system went from having 0 care for people in addiction situations to treating more than 200 cases in recent months. These treatments seek to provide a response to cases that do not require hospitalization.

The Minister of Health, María Teresa Barán, provided the numbers this Monday after an evaluation meeting of the plan that brings together 22 institutions in three main axes: prevention, treatment and combating drug trafficking.

In the area of treatment and rehabilitation, the main drawback is the lack of psychiatric professionals. “We have about 170 psychiatrists for addiction treatment and we need more than 700 to cover the needs,” said Barán.

That is why the Ministry of Health began a training program where doctors from other specialties acquire knowledge to manage addiction situations that do not require hospitalization.

“We have trained more than 360 doctors and from having 0 services in the area of addiction, today we have more than 200 people treated,” highlighted the minister, thereby providing care for detoxification.

Rehabilitation centers

For cases of hospitalization, the Government is preparing the authorization of the Residential Center for Addiction Discontinuation and Rehabilitation (Ditres), in the city of Piribebuy, financed with resources seized from organized crime under the administration of the Secretariat of Seized and Confiscated Assets (Senabico). .

The already operational center will be expanded to Ditres with a investment of G. 15,000 millionaccording to what was announced at the beginning of this year, while there are plans to enable other similar sites for hospitalization in the country.

According to data from the Ministry of the Interior and the National Police, there are about 90,000 people with addiction problems in Asunción and the Central department. Minister Barán indicated that 90% of these estimated cases do not require hospitalization, so the training of doctors in action protocols and of psychiatrists within the public system will continue to be strengthened.

However, the minister pointed out that even with detoxification and hospitalization programs, if work is not done on the community and family component, these people will fall back into the situation of addiction, which is why the Government’s strategy will also promote more prevention programs and focus on communities for the prevention of drug abuse.
