Regensburg Missed Opportunity: SSV Jahn Narrowly Edged at Augsburg

In the friendly against FC Augsburg, SSV Jahn showed significant improvement in the first half compared to the away game at SC Paderborn 07 and created some good scoring chances against the Bundesliga club. However, FCA took the lead after half an hour from a corner. In the second half, SSV was once again the more active team, but despite good chances, they failed to equalize. In the end there was a narrow 0-1 defeat. You can watch interviews on Jahn TV Florian Ballas and Dejan Galjen.

Head coach Joe Enochs diligently changed the starting eleven for the friendly in Augsburg compared to the Paderborn game. The Jahn head coach only had to do without Mansour Ouro-Tagba (international trip with the Togo national team), Bene Saller (adductor injury), Oscar Schönfelder, Christian Schmidt (both knees), Max Meyer (ankle and ligament injury), Alex Weidinger (ill ) and Nico Ochojski (muscular). Felix Gebhardt, Christian Kühlwetter, Kai Pröger and Andi Geipl were rested. Robin Ziegele also became the father of a son on Thursday morning and was with his wife and their offspring. Congratulations, Goat!

In the mild autumn weather, the Jahnelf almost got off to a lightning start: after a cross from Hein, Huth put the ball in the goal with a flying header, but the referee ruled it offside (2nd). The Jahnelf remained in control and at a corner, Dahmen was able to fend off Huth’s header in front of Galjen with his fists (3′). Bulic entered the penalty area from the left, where Galjen took the ball, but a defender was able to block his shot (5th). As a result, Jahn continued to use the offensive pressure well, but FCA also occasionally made it into the final third. Bauer’s cross from the right slipped through to the advanced Hein, who volleyed to the left of the penalty area and just missed the far corner (13th). Meiser’s header from a corner on the other side was no problem for Pollersbeck (16th). In a now evenly balanced game with goal area scenes on both sides, Gouweleeuw tried to lob the ball from distance over the advanced Pollersbeck for FCA, but the ball went over the crossbar (23′). With good pressing, Bulic managed to get the ball on the edge of the penalty area, but Dahmen failed (27′). Shortly afterwards, the FCA keeper was challenged again and defused Bauer’s shot with a flying save (28th). After these opportunities for the SSV, Breunig cleared a sharp cross from the right side in his own penalty area (29th). During a corner, the ball found its way to Wolf via a detour, who headed it into the far corner from the right side, making it 1-0 for Augsburg (30′). The Jahnelf remained committed, after a long period of possession, Bulic passed Bauer in the penalty area, but a defender just cleared his shot from close range (42nd). Arne Maier put a shot from over 20 meters next to the left post for FCA (37th).

Both teams started the second half unchanged. Galjen had the first chance when he cleverly won the ball in the penalty area and was denied by Dahmen from a tight angle (48′). Shortly afterwards, the FCA goalkeeper had to stretch for a long time to clear a cross with his fist for a corner. Hottmann headed at the near post, but Koudossou prevented the equalizer on the line (49′). Augsburg’s Maier then tested Pollersbeck in the Jahn goal in the 54th minute – Augsburg’s first good opportunity in the second half. On the other side, Ballas fired a long-range shot two meters over the FCA goal – not a bad attempt (58th). The Jahnelf remained active and Dahmen was just able to clear Hottmann’s sharp cross from the right for a corner (62′). Wurm next tried a low long-range shot, Dahmen let it bounce forward, and Augsburger was just able to clear substitute Anspach’s follow-up shot for a corner (67′). Kother, who had also just come into the game, also tested Dahmen (71′). Augsburg also tried to set the tone, but the Regensburg defense had the FCA offense well under control. Even in the final phase, the Jahnelf were closer to equalizing than Augsburg were to the second goal, but the shots from Ansbach (84th), Bittroff (86th) and Ernst (88th) did not find their way into the goal. So it remained a 1-0 win for FC Augsburg, but the Jahnelf still went home knowing that they had a good game against a Bundesliga team. The next league game for SSV Jahn is on October 19th, when they face Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Jahnstadion Regensburg at 1 p.m.
