CARLOS Alcaraz continued his winning streak, Wednesday (9/10), when he earned his 12th straight win to advance to the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters.
Alcaraz was forced to fight hard to record a 6-4, 7-5 win over Gael Monfils and become the first Spaniard to reach the last eight in Shanghai since 2017 (Rafael Nadal and Albert Ramos-Vinolas).
Alcaraz held back his nerves to improve to 3-1 in head to head against Monfils.

“The main thing I tried in this match was to stay calm, control my emotions and wait for my opportunities,” said Alcaraz, as broadcast by ATP.
“I had several chances to break him at the start of the second set (and) I couldn’t take advantage of them. At that time, I tried to stay calm and think ‘I will win more’.”
“It really helped me to show my best tennis during the match. I felt the ball very well, much better than when playing in America. So, I’m happy to be able to do that and keep going,” continued the 21-year-old tennis player who improved his winning record fell to 51-9 on the season.

After defeating Alcaraz at the Cincinnati Open last August, Monfils looked to continue that form and etch his name in history as the second oldest ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finalist in the series’ history (since 1990), but the Spaniard had other ideas.
Alcaraz used his skill and guile to beat Monfils in a grueling ball exchange, with the Spaniard winning 88% of the points at the net, according to ATP statistics.
The third seed still has the chance to face Jannik Sinner, who fought hard past Ben Shelton 6-4, 7-6 (1), to meet in the last four.

Alcaraz beat the Italian last Wednesday in a thrilling match to claim the China Open title, his fourth of the season after Indian Wells, Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
“It’s a great goal to reach the semifinals, let’s see if he can do it too,” said Alcaraz, who leads them 6-4 head to head.
“I have watched his matches before mine, he plays at a great level, and that helps me to perform well
