Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who has escaped Israel’s net for a year and about whom truths and denials alternate, has now ordered the leaders of the terrorist group in the West Bank to renew suicide attacks in Israel shortly after replacing Ismail Haniyeh as head of the Hamas political bureau. The Wall Street Journal wrote this today, citing Arab intelligence officials. The provision would have been given shortly before the failed suicide attack in Tel Aviv, says the newspaper, according to which some senior Hamas officials had reservations about the decision.
Citing Arab officials involved in the mediation, the Wall Street Journal also confirms earlier reports that Sinwar recently renewed contacts with mediators on the ceasefire and hostages. The outlet reveals that it has seen a letter allegedly written by Sinwar last month, which states that Hamas is ready for a prolonged war of attrition to “undermine Israel’s resolve” and pave the way for the end of the Jewish state.
Sinwar’s positions would be considered extremist even within the same group, the newspaper wrote, citing Israeli and Arab officials and former officials. After Haniyeh’s assassination in July, Hamas political officials had reportedly suggested former leader Khaled Mashaal as his successor, before the movement’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, sent a message that Sinwar should be chosen.
