As an accompanying measure to the construction of the Limmattalbahn, Zurich voters approved the expansion of various intersections on the Bernstrasse and Überlandstrasse in Dietikon and Schlieren. This means that the centers of these two cities can be relieved of through traffic.

Motorized traffic is to be relocated from Badenerstrasse and Zürcherstrasse to the Bern and Überlandstrasse axis. However, in order to accommodate the additional traffic volume, various intersections need to be expanded – including the Engstringer intersection in Schlieren. The intersection is to be expanded with an underpass for the main traffic axis. This increases the capacity for left turns and thus the performance of the intersection. However, it will still be possible to drive on the main traffic axis above ground. This is essential so that traffic can circulate even if the underpass is closed and exceptional transports with oversized goods can continue to pass through the intersection. The project also includes redesigning the Engstringerstrasse/Rütistrasse intersection as a roundabout.

The government council has approved the road project and released a partial amount of 47.6 million francs from the framework and additional credit for the Limmattalbahn 2nd stage. Unless legal action is taken against the determination, the cantonal civil engineering office plans to begin construction work at the end of 2025. The construction time is around two and a half years.
