The Financial Times newspaper reported that the permanent representatives of the European Union countries will study the possibility of extending the validity period of sanctions against Russia to three years, and explained that this comes at the request of the United States, which is ready to participate, within the Group of Seven industrialized countries, in providing a loan to Kiev in the amount of $50. Billion dollars using income from frozen Russian assets, if it obtains guarantees that these funds will not be unfrozen in the near future.

The Council of the European Union had published on its official website its new sanctions regime against Russia due to what it called “hybrid” Russian activities that destabilize the European Union. The Council described this “diverse group of hybrid threats” as including undermining electoral processes and the functioning of democratic institutions. Threats against and subversion of economic activities, services of public interest or critical infrastructure, the use of coordinated disinformation, foreign information manipulation and interference, malicious cyber activities, exploitation of migrants, and other destabilizing activities.

Under this framework, persons supporting such “activities” will be subject to a freeze on their assets, European Union citizens and companies will be prevented from providing funds to them, and natural persons will also be subject to a travel ban and prevented from entering or transiting through the European Union territory.
