“We received 12 calls about fallen trees throughout Lithuania, but the number of calls is increasing, mainly in Klaipėda, trees fell on roads and cars,” Giedrius Vaičiulis, a specialist in the Situation Coordination Department of the Fire Protection and Rescue Department, told BNS on Thursday evening.
Firefighters have been getting reports of downed trees on a daily basis lately, with about 90 in the past few days.
On Wednesday morning, at 5:45 a.m., a report was received that a tree had fallen on a Ford Galaxy car in Šiauliai, on Gegužių Street.
Using a chainsaw, the tree was removed from the car and driveway. After 5 hours it was also reported about a tree that fell on an Opel car and severed electric cables in the Švenčioni district, in the Švenčioni district, on the New World cul-de-sac and Šlaito street.
The road was cordoned off with “STOP” tape. Tree removed.
4:48 a.m. a report was received that a tree fell on top of VW and Renault cars and the electric wires were broken in Dziaugsmo and Garsioija streets in Vilnius.
The tree was cut and removed from the roadway, the Department of Fire and Rescue said.
In the evening, after 4:00 p.m., a fallen tree was found on Toyota Prius, Opel Corsa and Ford Focus cars in Savanorių Avenue in Vilnius. The tree is cut and removed.
Also on Wednesday, in Vilnius, Naujamiestis district, on Mindaugas Street, in the school yard, a tree fell. No one was injured in the incident.
On Thursday, shipping was restricted in the port of Klaipėda due to the increased wind.
According to port representative Ignė Rotautaitė-Pukenė, ship traffic is restricted from 11 a.m., and around 12:20 p.m. wind gusts had reached 26.7 meters per second.
