In the hospital 11 Romanian pilgrims who ate poisonous mushrooms

According to information from the website Voria.gr, the pilgrims, who had spent the last few days in the Skete of Agia Anna, took the road yesterday afternoon to climb to the top of Athos, in order to worship in the church of the Transfiguration of the Savior.

In the evening they spent the night in the countryside and lit a fire to warm themselves and prepare a makeshift meal. Some of them gathered mushrooms from the mountain, which they thought were edible.

A few hours later, however, they all felt discomfort and some felt very sick. The group of pilgrims returned to Dafni, where they were given first aid by doctors of the Karion Health Center and seven of them had to be given serum, as they were in a more serious condition. Then they left by sea taxi from Mount Athos for Ouranoupoli.

EKAV was immediately notified, which picked up the pilgrims from the port of Ouranoupoli, some of them in a semi-conscious state, and transported them to Polygyros hospital.

Four of the Romanian pilgrims who are in a more serious condition were transferred to the Papageorgiou hospital in Thessaloniki, however information indicates that no one’s health is in danger.
