Senegal’s Elite Honored: United Nations Bestows Highest Accolade on Noteworthy Humanitarians

Bangui, Central African Republic, October 7, 2024-/African Media Agency (AMA)/- On October 3, 2024, the peacekeepers of the 9th rotation of the Senegalese Formed Police contingent of MINUSCA (SENFPU1/MINUSCA9) received UN medals in recognition of their contribution to peace in the Central African Republic. Made up of 140 members, including 26 women, this contingent distinguished itself in particular by its exemplary commitment during patrols in the 4th and 8th districts of Bangui, participating in the security of these areas.

The ceremony took place in the presence of local authorities, representatives of the United Nations, commanders of other Police Units formed on mission in the CAR.

Since October 28, 2022, the unit has been committed to carrying out the classic missions assigned to it in its sector of competence, namely the 4th and 8th districts of Bangui.

In collaboration with the Internal Security Forces, they escorted Central African personalities and shared their expertise on topics such as legal procedures, ethics, as well as gender issues and women’s empowerment, in cooperation with the Gender Unit of MINUSCA.


In addition, these peacekeepers carried out more than 400 water distributions to meet the basic needs of the populations in their areas of intervention in Bangui. They also provided free medical consultations and treatment to more than 750 poor people in these localities.

In his speech, Police Commissioner Abdoul Aziz Diop, commander of this contingent, underlined the importance of the work carried out by the police forces in these terms: “ Each mission is a step towards peace and stability. You have demonstrated exemplary commitment to challenges, dear colleagues”. Each medal, he said “ is a symbol of courage and dedication, a recognition not only of the actions, but also of the humanity of each person “. Commissioner Ndiaye, while thanking his men and women, also underlined the challenges inherent in maintaining peace in a context as fragile as that of the Central African Republic. “ We were faced with difficult situations, but thanks to our training, our determination and our solidarity, we overcame these challenges. “, he said.

The representative of the MINUSCA Police Chief also took the floor to express his gratitude. “ It is an honor to work alongside men and women who demonstrate such professionalism and bravery. You are the pride of your nation and the international community “, he said.

The recipients said receiving this medal is an honor that reminds them of their sacrifices and commitment. Police Warrant Officer Yaye Astou Sene, recipient, moved, said: “ A few months ago, we arrived here with the desire to contribute to peace. Time passed so quickly, but each moment was rich in lessons and humanity ».

For her part, Lieutenant Thiaka Mbaye added: “ This ceremony marks an end, but it is also the beginning of a new commitment. We are ready to continue our struggle for peace, no matter where the path takes us ». « I have experienced moments of joy and sorrow, but each challenge has strengthened our unity “, he concluded.

The ceremony closed with a parade of recipients as well as traditional songs, folk dances, the lions and lionesses of Teranga captivated the public with their energy and talent, illustrating the richness of their culture while paying tribute to their mission.
