Warning Signs of Genius: The Unassuming Hero of Dutch Highways

A special thank you from Rijkswaterstaat on Wednesday afternoon. In a message on “Thank you very much!”

The lane was closed for emergency transport from Tilburg to the University Medical Center (UMC) in Utrecht. This allowed an ambulance, accompanied by the police, to drive from Tilburg to Utrecht without congestion.

“We like to see this, traffic that respects the red crosses and thus clears the left lane for emergency transport,” Rijkswaterstaat said. The message ends with a kiss emoticon.

The thank you does not come completely out of the blue, because red crosses are often ignored. Last February on the A2 near Eindhoven, for example, after an accident. “Why people think they can drive under a red cross remains a mystery to me,” said a road inspector from Rijkswaterstaat.

Minimum 250 euros
Anyone who does not care about a red cross above the road risks a fine of 250 euros. Ignoring a red cross falls under criminal law. This means that the public prosecutor determines how high the fine will actually be.

Since 2019, the police, ANWB, ambulance services, recovery companies, road workers and Rijkswaterstaat have been drawing attention to the dangers of ignoring a red cross with the campaign ‘#nietvoorniX’.

The slogan was coined because the number of directors who did not keep such a cross increased enormously that year. In the year of its launch, ten thousand fines were issued to drivers who ignored a red cross.
