Legendary Voice Now a Distant Memory

It was sometime between the 80’s and 90’s when Pakistan Television (PTV) used to have a singer who seemed a little different from other singers.

Very simple, light makeup, slicked back hair and barely looking at the camera, but her voice was very melodious.

His song ‘Watan Ki Mitti Ghusha Rahana’ sung on the occasion of Independence Day on 14th August was heard with passion and passion even decades ago and even today its flavor has not diminished. This singer was Neyra Noor.

This legendary playback and ghazal singer of Pakistan passed away in Karachi on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s daughter Muneeza Hashmi interviewed Nayera Noor in one of her shows ‘Tum Jo Chaho To Sano’ a few years ago.

Maniza said that she introduced Neyra in PT because there was a connection between Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s poetry and Neyra’s voice.

He sang many other poems and ghazals besides Faiz’s poem ‘Aaj Bazar Mein Pabjolan Chalo’.

In this show, Neyra had told that when she was studying at the National College of Arts, there used to be concerts where big music teachers used to come.

He said: ‘Professor Israr of Islamia College was supposed to come to a concert, but he was late in arriving, so my classmates and teachers made me sit on the stage to sing until he arrived.

‘When I got off the stage after singing, Professor Israr was standing in front, he stopped me and introduced himself and said that I have come to tell you that you sing very well, don’t waste this art.’

Niera Noor said that Prof. Israr then encouraged her a lot and took her to the radio station after which she sang whatever program and ghazal she sang on the radio.

Neyra also told in this program that she was not fond of singing since childhood, but she was very fond of listening to music and she used to listen to some song all the time and try to copy it.

‘At that time, it never occurred to me that I would sing or take up music as a career.’

In the program, Neyra Noor told about her childhood that she had a feeling as if she was looking for something.

‘I used to stand there wherever a right head would fall into my ear. In this search, the fun in me gradually disappeared and I became serious and sober.’

He said that high quality music was heard in his house and there was a whole collection which was listened to by all the family members.

She said that after marriage, when children were born, it was very difficult for her to do Riyad because the children and household responsibilities were also with her, but still she tried to do a little Riyad because she knew how to do Riyad. If they did not do this, the quality of their voice would not be good.

‘They have done what they came into the world to do’

Mandana Zaidi, niece of Niyara Noor’s husband Shehryar Zaidi, who is also the daughter of renowned artist Shah Nawaz Zaidi, told Independent Urdu that Niyara was a very loving woman.

‘She was a great cook and loved cooking for her family. Music was something he did with great passion and when he left music, he knew he had done what he had to do.’

According to Mandana, no one sang Faiz the way Neera sang and whatever they sang is a monument by which Neera Noor will also be remembered.

He said that Neyra was also a very strong woman spiritually. ‘They knew that she had done what she came into the world to do. She was a very caring, careful and noble lady.’

Mian Yusuf Salahuddin aka Mian Salli shared some of his memories with Independent Urdu regarding Neera Noor. He said: ‘I remember it was probably 1969 or 1970 when I was studying in Government College. At that time All Pakistan Musical Conference used to be held in open air theater Janah Bagh. Since I was fond of music since childhood, I was there. It was a great party. Neera Noor also came to this event and I think it was her first performance in public. They came and sang Begum Akhtar’s famous Dadra ‘Chharhi Kali Ghata Jaya Mora Lehrai’. Believe me, the environment itself has changed. Everyone was amazed at how beautiful the voice of this small, thin and delicate girl was. After that everyone stood up and demanded that they sing something else but they didn’t. Then after that, whatever work Neera Noor did with Faiz Chaa, and other works, and then especially with Pakistan Television, was very different. I am deeply saddened and I know that in her last years she was completely detached from worldly things and her inclination towards spirituality was very high. All we can pray for Neera Noor is that God has mercy on her because she was such a star that can never be forgotten.’

Early in life

Neyra Noor was born in 1950 in the Indian state of Assam. His father was an active member of the All India Muslim League. Neyra along with her mother and siblings migrated to Pakistan between 1957 and 1958 and settled in Karachi.
