Unchained in the Congo: One Man’s Battle to Save the Last Lungs of Africa

The Minister of Public Works, Flavien Nzengui Nzoundou, clearly displayed his disapproval and told officials of the Gabon Motorway Company (SAG), during a crisis meeting in his Cabinet on Tuesday, all his dissatisfaction with the delay by the development and construction work of the Transgabonaise road project, linking Libreville to Franceville (828 km), more specifically the section between the localities of Nkok and Ntoum (20 km), the delivery of which had initially been fixed in 2023.

The Minister of Public Works wanted to know and understand the reasons for the slowness and difficulty recorded in the start and acceleration of the pace of work to be carried out between Nkok and Ntoum, taking into account the initial schedule set in the initial specifications. He demanded that a new construction timetable be provided to him without delay and that it be scrupulously respected.

“I fear that this project will never be completed before December 2024 as initially agreed,” he lamented and “I not only want to understand the situation, but I ask you without delay to tell me the new timetable and deadlines delivery of the site »hammered Flavien Nzengui Nzoundou.

Despite numerous calls to order, SAG (project owner) and the construction company AFCONS did not deign to act diligently, due to financing delays and difficulties experienced in paying suppliers, as well as in the supply of equipment and other construction materials, explained Salim Béjaoui, Director General of the Gabon Motorway Company.

Another crisis meeting is planned in the coming days between AFCONS managers and SAG to develop a new detailed timetable for the effective resumption of work, including delivery times, to be submitted to the Minister of Works. public, more determined than ever to keep an eye on things.

Work on the Transgabonaise development and construction project was officially launched on September 25, 2020 in the Estuaire province. The delivery of a first batch of 81 km was scheduled for December 2024. It would still have to wait, in all likelihood and probably also extend the delivery times of the Transgabonaise to a relatively distant horizon.
