Tengbom’s mission has been to bring together culturally marked buildings with a contemporary building where aesthetics and function meet.
Midsommarkransen’s new elementary school fits in well next to the old fire station building. The building’s collaboration with the park contributes to both the school yard and an improved park, which reinforces the school as a central place in the district.

The new school building with five floors is located behind the fire station’s preserved wagon hall. This has been redesigned as a school cafeteria with a preschool class on the upper floor and joined with the new main building. In this way, the carriage hall has been preserved with its period-typical facade motif as a backdrop against the intersection Bäckvägen-Tellusborgsvägen.

The new rectangular building body gathers the school’s spaces on a concentrated surface. In this way, the natural site was saved where certain parts are preserved, such as several large trees and an adjacent pine hill. The area behind the school building is designed as a schoolyard and borders Enbacken’s park with natural walking and cycling paths. Shared use between the schoolyard and the park also enhances the area’s well-being for the public.

The fire station’s cultural buildings are green-classified, which has required consultation with building antiques. The preserved buildings are carefully restored with original materials such as slate, brick and wood. The new school building is complemented by modern materials in a tonal color scale.
The inspiration for the choice of materials and color shades for the new building is taken from the original building from the 40s. We have chosen robust and durable materials such as concrete, aluminum and wood. The school’s function and need for materials that can withstand wear and tear have also been in focus. In January 2023, the first lesson rang.
Midsommarkransen’s elementary school was nominated for the Stockholm building of the year 2023. The screening takes place on Sunday 6 October at 11-12.
