Defying a Fading Giant: Netanyahu’s Unwavering Resolve Against the Tides of US Diplomacy

The officials said that two weeks after Israel rejected a US-led proposal for a ceasefire with the Lebanese faction movement, Washington is not now trying to revive the proposal.

The report spoke of the inability of the Joe Biden administration before the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, which is ignoring its calls for restraint, as it did in Gaza.

Officials said fears were growing within the Biden administration that what Israel promised would be a limited operation that would soon grow into a broader, longer-term conflict.

“We couldn’t stop them from taking action, but we could at least try to shape it,” a senior US official told CNN, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe private discussions.

The ceasefire proposal, which the United States put forward with France, called for a 21-day pause in the fighting between Israel and the Lebanese faction movement to give the two sides space to work on a larger deal to return Israeli and Lebanese civilians to their homes in northern Israel and southern Lebanon.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said on Monday: “We support their ability to target militants, destroy the Lebanese faction movement infrastructure, and their ability, but we are fully aware of the many times in the past where Israel entered into what seemed like limited operations and remained for months or years, and in Ultimately, this is not the result we want to see.”

The sources also said that Biden offered, behind closed doors, support to eliminate the infrastructure of the movement of Lebanese factions along the borders of Israel and in southern Lebanon, as long as Israel’s operations remained limited.

According to a CNN report, AThe United States still wants to see the resumption of ceasefire talks in Lebanon, as the White House confirmed that it will conduct regular consultations with the Israelis, Lebanese and others regarding the appropriate moment to press for such an agreement.

But an American official indicated that it is not yet clear who the United States will deal with in any future talks, after the assassination of the Secretary-General of the Lebanese faction movement, Hassan Nasrallah, and a large number of senior party leaders.

On the other hand, American officials expressed their concern about the operations carried out by Israel in close proximity to Beirut Airport, which may threaten the ability of American citizens to leave the country via the remaining limited flights.

A Pentagon spokesman said that the United States is in discussions with Israel regarding the airport regarding the safety of Americans living in the country, and State Department spokesman Miller stated that the United States has made clear to Israel that it wants the roads leading to Beirut Airport to continue operating.

For nearly 3 weeks, Israeli forces have launched a devastating air attack on southern and eastern Lebanon, in addition to the southern suburbs of Beirut, areas considered a stronghold of the Lebanese faction movement.

Regarding the response to Iran, American officials said that the United States was urging Israel not to excessively escalate by launching a retaliatory strike on Iran, but they warned that what Israel sees as a proportional attack may not be consistent with what the rest of the world – including the United States – may consider a response. Thoughtful.

Former Israeli diplomat Alon Pinkas told CNN: “The only influence that the Americans have now is to summon the Minister of Defense to Washington and buy time,” as Yoav Galant is scheduled to meet with his American counterpart, Lloyd Austin, on Wednesday, in a visit that the Biden administration hopes will buy time. To consult and plan before Israel implements its potential response against Iran.

With Gallant in Washington, the United States likely believes Israel will wait until it launches an attack, Pinkas said. “This makes sense in a political science simulation game, not in Israeli politics,” he added.
Netanyahu was in New York when Israel carried out the massive strike in Beirut that killed the leader of the Lebanese faction movement, Hassan Nasrallah.

Gallant had previously said that Israel is coordinating closely with the United States as it prepares to respond to Iran, but Israel will ultimately make its own decision, and he said: “Everything is on the table.”
