The “Ai Stratis Green Island” initiative aims to meet the needs of the island in electricity and heating, utilizing exclusively Renewable Energy Sources.
The project was carried out by the Center for Renewable Sources and Energy Saving (CRES) and DEDDIE completed the connection works in order to put the project into operation.
The test of the program was successfully carried out on Saturday, October 5, with the result that for 2.5 hours Ai Stratis became the first green energy-independent island in Greece.
Energy production is carried out by a wind turbine, a photovoltaic station and accumulators, while it also includes a central district heating system. For district heating, it is planned to store heat in hot water tanks in order to meet the heating needs of the entire settlement of Ai Stratis.
The said project, apart from the benefits for the environment and the inhabitants of the island, will be a point of reference for a series of projects with high penetration of Renewable Energy Sources in Non-Interconnected Islands, such as Ai Stratis.
It is noted that similar initiatives that mark the transition towards climate neutrality have already been implemented in Tilos and Ikaria, with a positive impact on the local communities.
It is recalled that the Ikaria hybrid station has been in operation since 2019 and combines wind and hydropower, covering a significant percentage of the island’s energy needs.
The hybrid station in Tilos has been operating since the end of 2018, and includes batteries as a means of storage. Since Tilos is an island in the Kos – Kalymnos complex, without a local power station, in emergency situations, the hybrid station together with a small diesel generator located on the island, provide the necessary energy to cover the local demand.
A similar Special Pilot Project is also being implemented in Astypalaia, where DEDDIE is participating in the conversion of its Electric System to a “green” one, while the adoption of an integrated electrification plan has pushed the island’s energy transition.
