Austria’s Literary Heavyweights Clash in Thrilling Book Prize Showdown

Surprises on the shortlist for the Austrian Book Prize: While the two prominent Vorarlberg authors Michael Köhlmeier and Arno Geiger are no longer in the running, Salzburg’s Elke Laznia made it to the final with her book “Fishbone Days”. Katharina Winkler (“Seven Mile Heart”), Valerie Fritsch (“Lemons”), Elias Hirschl (“Content”) and Reinhard Kaiser-Mühlecker (“Burning Fields”) can also hope for the award ceremony on November 18th.

The shortlist for the debut prize is already known, which includes Verena Dolovai’s “Dorf ohne Franz” and Frieda Paris’ “Nachwasser” with Julia Jost’s Carinthian anti-local novel “Where the sharpest tooth of the Karawanken bares itself up into the sky”. The most talked about first works in the spring. The Austrian Book Prize is endowed with 20,000 euros, the debut prize with 10,000 euros. Anyone who is on the shortlist will be guaranteed 2,500 euros.

For Benedikt Föger, President of the Main Association of the Austrian Book Trade, the titles on this year’s shortlist for the Austrian Book Prize “impressively reflect the diversity and innovative power of Austrian literature and deserve special attention. They show that in addition to the established voices, new authors also deserve the receive attention.”

There were a total of 110 submissions from 62 publishers for the Austrian Book Prize 2024, awarded by the Ministry of Culture, the HVB and the Vienna Chamber of Labor. The winners will be announced at a gala in the run-up to “Buch Wien”.

This year the jury consists of Zita Bereuter (head of literature department, FM4), Anke Bosse (literary scholar, University of Klagenfurt), Nicole List (bookseller, List bookstore), Johanna Öttl (literature program, Alte Schmiede) and Judith von Sternburg (literary critic and editor, “Frankfurter Rundschau”). Last year, the Austrian Book Prize went to Clemens J. Setz for his novel “Moons before Landing”, the debut prize went to Arad Dabiri for “Drama”.
