Rebooting Reform: PASOK’s Pivotal Election Test

The Mayor of Athens and candidate for the presidency of PASOK was invited to the morning show “Society Hour MEGA” Harry Doukasahead of the second round of internal party elections for the nomination of the party’s president.

Referring to debate between the two gladiators he said: “I think it will be on Friday, I hope, and it’s very important. Open dialogue, public debate. In my opinion, it is necessary because it is a very crucial process, a historical ballot box, it has national characteristics. We want PASOK to rise in stature and I believe that the dilemma is very strong: stagnation or change”.

At the same time, he emphasized: “We believe that PASOK can be the great democratic faction that will be a clear choice for the progressive governance of the country.”

Regarding the votes he collected throughout Greece, Mr. Doukas notes:

“Everything worries me, they are numbers that we take into account. In Athens there were also two candidates who were in front of me who have deep roots, Geroulanos and Diamantopoulou. The municipal elections are a different ballot box and the history we are involved in is a different story.”

“I have been mayor for 9 months and we are fighting, trying to turn the page. It is a short period of time to be able to capture the effort we are making, but I think it is a very good result, but there is a problem. The problem is with PASOK in general and it is in the urban centers. What is the distribution of candidates individually in the urban centers is one issue, but more crucially, the overall reach in the urban centers is very low. To change this, a greater verticality is needed on the issues, on the inequalities, on the very big problems with purchasing power. To be able to address in a clear way the many people who live in Athens who have terrible needs”, he says.

“We need to say some clear policies to reduce the very large inequalities. The first is to greatly increase the income, to talk again about the connection of PASOK with the world of work. All of Europe measures purchasing power and we have purchasing power.”

For the attacks he receives as mayor of Athens, he emphasized: “The effort that is being made, what we say to create a topic, is an effort that creates a mud that can leave you with scars. In the middle of the pre-election period, cameras were set up to find mice in the Constitution and they waited for the mice to come out and they were there for 2-3 days. There had been a flood and they accused me of not cleaning a well, which doesn’t have a well there.”

“It is very important and critical to connect with the people who supported all the nominations and to ensure that all the executives who have very nice ideas are used, and Anna Diamantopoulou who has spoken about digitization and how new technology comes in as a means but not as a purpose to enhance the quality of life. He has also made specific proposals for education that are of great importance. And Pavlos Geroulanos with the ‘Rebirth’ program”.

“We take responsibility and entered into this adventure because we believe that it is very crucial for the country that PASOK immediately stands up and not for the citizens to turn their backs. In order to do this, we need to be very specific about the problems in order to be able to specify the actions in the urban centers where people have great difficulty”, he says.

“I deeply believe that the demand for change is very strong. I didn’t talk about deletions and then about unity. I said from the beginning that we should all be together, nor should we say among ourselves that there are adventurers, arrogant, princes and fugitives. We are all making a great effort for PASOK to strengthen it. I think we have a last historic opportunity to strengthen it and we all take responsibility, I took it too, and I would like after 6 months to be with a PASOK with a very large percentage, a clear choice for the progressive governance of the country and not to discuss the same again. The world of the center-left will not wait for us for a lifetime, we don’t have time”.
