Diving into the Unknown: France’s Elite Gendarmerie Unit Embarks on a Perilous Quest to Preserve the Arcachon Basin

2024-10-09 06:00:00

On Arcachon beach, a few meters from the Chapelle pier, the water is clear this Tuesday October 8 on an afternoon when the sun, curiously (we have lost the habit of it in fact), has decided to illuminate the Basin. Three gendarmes in diving gear enter the water for this first “clean territories” operation, one of 100 others carried out in the Region.

It is one of the deepest sites in the Basin. Very quickly, the depths drop to 15, 20 or even 25 meters. “In 2023, we observed nearly 2,000 offenses relating to waste in the gendarmerie zone (+ 2.6% compared to 2022), explains Jean-Louis Amat, the sub-prefect of Arcachon. Even if mentalities are evolving favorably on the subject, such awareness-raising operations are necessary. »

Behind the scenes

“We intend to repeat this type of action every month,” explains Jérôme Goussard, the brigade major. “We are in a magnificent environment, but behind the scenes, what we cannot see underwater, is sometimes less impressive. » If what is recovered is identified, all this can lead to a procedure. But not this Tuesday.

After twenty minutes underwater, the three divers returned with their arms full. “Well, we have fishing nets, iron bars, pieces of oyster bags. These nets continue to fish despite themselves, we have released a few sea spiders. But we found a dead ray. And it’s also dangerous for divers. It is a sandy area, with small canyons and rocks. Today, there was good visibility, 1.5 meters, there is the wreck of the ”Cotre-Bleu” a little further away, and therefore quite a few fish. »

Here, this waste must certainly have drifted after storms. “But we find everything at the bottom,” assures Jérôme Goussard. It’s sometimes surprising. Fishing rods, everything, really. We will repeat these operations. The next one will take place in Lège-Cap-Ferret with the partnership of the Marine Natural Park. »
