Bean et Bonheur, artisan roaster, won a bronze medal for three of its coffees during the last edition of The Golden Bean competition, in the Americas division. The company based on Saint-Jacques Street received these honors during a ceremony in Houston, Texas.
Started in Australia more than twenty years ago, The Golden Bean is the world’s largest competition focused on coffee roasting. A version bringing together artisans from North, South and Central America has existed for several years.
This is the third consecutive participation in this major competition for Bean et Bonheur. The roaster won a few bronze medals with some of its coffees during each of these editions.
“Initially, the primary purpose of our participation was to receive an evaluation from the jury and find ways to improve. Now, we want to move up the competitive ladder,” says Steve Blais, co-founder of the company.
Competition
The most recent competition took place from September 17 to 21 in the United States, in Houston, Texas. It was the first time that the Bean and Bonheur team went to the venue of the event, which changes city every year.
“We were able to have a much more complete experience there by spending the week there. Among other things, we tasted several coffees and met suppliers, in addition to participating in the awards ceremony with around 150 other roasters,” underlines Mr. Blais.
Prix
During this ceremony, the roaster won bronze medals with three of its coffees in two categories. The roasts that won in the Espresso category are Testi, a coffee from Ethiopia with notes of berries, citrus and yogurt, as well as Cherry Madness, a coffee from Costa Rica with notes of black cherry, raspberry and dark chocolate. Londrina coffee, from Brazil, won the bronze medal in the Filter category.
The competition brought together more than 900 coffees in the different categories. The coffees were evaluated on a few criteria, such as acidity, sweetness and aftertaste, to name a few.
“We are always very happy to have such visibility in our industry, especially since the jury evaluates the competitors with a blind tasting. It’s very motivating and pushes us to work even harder to try to obtain a gold medal,” emphasizes the co-founder.
